“Hiring the NY-based Event-in-a-Tent to set up a 25-foot-high Stratus 72 tipi at the reception site of my family memorial service provided me a solemn, awe-inspiring backdrop against which to register my grave thoughts, and to pursue with friends and guests the celebratory merriment that followed. The impressive height of the tent allowed my blooming weigela and the branches of my cypress to poke in picturesquely, showing the tent’s harmony with my yard environment. The stability of the structure was accomplished by binding the tips of eight weight-bearing poles that were fixated on the ground on the one end forming an octagonal perimeter, but pointed inward towards the zenith on the other. There was no center pole needed, maximizing the under-the-tent size to utilize. The overall aesthetics was elegantly rough and hefty, and no doubt minimalist to me. I kept the hanging light packages on in the fade mode for three consecutive nights leading to the event, both as a ritual and for their ornamental charm, but opened the top ventilator cap during the day to facilitate air circulation. I was required by my city to apply for a building permit beforehand, due to the size it covers, over 1,000 square feet. But the tent’s inherently flame retardant fabrics passed the inspection of my city’s Fire Marshall. It took Kenis’s highly skilled crew four hours to assemble my tipi, and two to dissemble it on the next day following the event. The crew spent one additional hour arranging 14 spruce tables and 16 benches under the tent before the event and setting up 30 folding chairs on the lawn outside of it. The overall experience of witnessing a tipi erected, taken down and repackaged to the truck was as eye-opening as it was fun and compelling.”
