You’ve seen the tipis on our website. You might have even rented a tipi for your event! But do you know where they originated from? Let’s find out!
Long before tipi tents became a familiar sight at music festivals and bohemian weddings, the nomadic Sami people of Lapland built these cone-shaped tents to shelter themselves as they roam around northern Scandinavia.

They pitched their tents with structural wooden poles that leaned at the top and wrapped them with animal skin or wool. A designated fireplace is usually found in the middle of the tent with smoke escaping through the hole above.
These tents are taken with them as they move from one place to the next with the reindeer herd in tow. Although, in the 20th century, many of them gave up their nomadic lifestyle and settled down in one place. Sami are similar to the Native Americans, except in North America, the natives followed the buffalo, while the Sami followed the reindeer.
Of course today, the original TenTipi Company (manufacturer of tipi tents) uses canvas, instead of animal skin (thank goodness!), that can withstand any weather conditions.
We are proud to be a part of the Authentic Nordic Tipi Association. TentTipi started this association to distinguish from copy-cat companies with inferior tipis. The company worked with and has the blessing of the Sami people to bring the amazing Tipi structures to the rest of the world!
